May Update To Full-Day Kindergarten

On April 13, 2017, the Moraga School District Governing Board approved a full-day kindergarten program, commencing the 2017-2018 school year.  The District is pleased to offer this additional time for increased student learning and social development, as well as more time for singing, reading, outdoor activities, and exploration.  A longer school day will also provide more opportunities for students to develop pro-social behavioral skills, including self-regulation, attentiveness, and self-confidence.

The decision to approve a full day kindergarten followed board presentations, research and staff and parent input.  Background information to support the decision making process can be found in March and April MSD Governing Board agenda packets. Research supporting full-day kindergarten is located on the MSD website - here.

2017-2018 kindergartners will follow the first grade early/late bird, parent conference and minimum day schedule.  School begins at 8:25 AM for early birds and ends at 1:55 PM.  School begins at 9:25 for late birds and ends at 3:05 PM.  All kindergartners will follow the early bird schedule the first three weeks of school as do first graders.  Recess, lunch and other schedules will be planned by each site’s principal and kindergarten staff.

Additional information about kindergarten will be sent to you by your child's school and the PTA in August.  Details about the kindergarten program will be explained to parents at Back to School Night, held the first few weeks of school.

Transitional Kindergarten

The Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 legislation requires all California school districts to provide a Transitional Kindergarten program so that children who will be affected by this change -- those with birthdays between September and December -- will have an opportunity to continue building their skills and abilities.  Their time in Transitional Kindergarten will help them to succeed in Kindergarten, become leaders in the classroom and confidently navigate the school day routine.
