MSD to Consider Full Day Kinder in 1718

The MSD Governing Board will receive a report on the possibility of implementing a full day kindergarten program for the 2017-2018 school year.  Currently, kindergarten students attend school from either 8:25 AM to 12:02 PM or 9:25 AM to 1:02 PM.  A full-day kindergarten program would run from either 8:25 AM to 1:50 PM or 9:25 AM to 3:05 PM.

The Board will discuss and review full-day kindergarten at the March or April Board meeting.  A recommendation to implement a full-day kindergarten is planned for Board review at the May Board meeting.

The full-day kindergarten concept and discussion coincides with Assembly Budget Committee Chair Phil Ting setting a State Budget priority of expanding access to early education and requiring full-day kindergarten throughout the entire state.

Transitional Kindergarten

The Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 legislation requires all California school districts to provide a Transitional Kindergarten program so that children who will be affected by this change -- those with birthdays between September and December -- will have an opportunity to continue building their skills and abilities.  Their time in Transitional Kindergarten will help them to succeed in Kindergarten, become leaders in the classroom and confidently navigate the school day routine.
